about

CHURCHW004

"The Church White series rolls on with the label debut of ascendant producer Laurence Guy. The dreamy, deep and seductive US house sounds of "Kojak EP" are exactly what you'd expect from a man whose bio tells us he "was raised by strippers in the dressing room of a Chicago lapdancing club with only a stack of Prince records for company." The title track opens proceedings with deep, undulating pads and polyrhythmic rattle before settling nicely into the kind of bumping bass led groove Andres hears in his dreams. Next up "WLYB" injects a little jazz into the palette via a melancholy sample and soulful vocal snippet, while an arrangement which delays the bassline until the final third keeps us on our toes. As we skip to the flip, Laurence lets fly with some celestial synths on "Stavros", getting us nice and elevated before a filthy machine funk bassline brings us right back to the nitty, gritty of the basement dancefloor. Last but not least, "Rizzo" hits the peaktime with a bongo led rhythm, spiritual keys and a yearning vocal sample, all driven home by a thick, distorted bassline that Prince would be proud of. By the sounds of this EP, summer's officially arrived." - Piccadilly Records
